In-vivo Passive Kinematics of Osteoarthritic Knees

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Osteoarthritis (OA) can lead to pain, disability, and loss of range of motion in the knee. The pre-operative condition of the knee has been shown to influence the functional outcome of treatments for OA [1]. A greater understanding of how motion of the knee is affected by OA may facilitate the assessment of the efficacy of potential treatments. We used a computer-assisted navigation system to study the passive kinematics of osteoarthritic knees intra-operatively and answer two questions: 1) Does the varus or valgus malalignment of the knee measured in full extension persist with flexion of the knee? and 2) Do “femoral rollback” (posterior translation of the femur on the tibia with flexion) and “screw-home” (external rotation of the femur with flexion) motions seen in a normal knee remain in an OA knee?

Intraoperative passive kinematics of osteoarthritic knees before and after total knee arthroplasty.
Total knee arthroplasty is a successful procedure to treat pain and functional disability due to osteoarthritis. However, precisely how a total knee arthroplasty changes the kinematics of an osteoarthritic knee is unknown. We used a surgical navigation system to measure normal passive kinematics from 7 embalmed cadaver lower extremities and in vivo intraoperative passive kinematics on 17 patien...

INTRODUCTION: A long-term effect of chronic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficiency is development of degenerative changes in the knee [1]. Andriacchi et al. [2] noted cartilage homeostasis would not be maintained by abnormal kinematics after ACL rupture and cartilage degeneration would initiate. However, no study to date has compared kinematics between ACL deficient knees and primary osteo...

Kinematics in osteoarthritic knees may be impeding efforts to reproduce "normal" knee kinematics in the prosthetic knee. Fourteen subjects with unilateral symptomatic knee osteoarthritis performed a supine leg press from 0 degrees to 90 degrees flexion against a 150-N load. The tibiofemoral contact pattern was recorded for both knees using sagittal T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Severi...
متن کاملKnee kinematics in medial osteoarthritis during in vivo weight-bearing activities.
Dynamic knee kinematics were analyzed for medial osteoarthritic (OA) knees in three activities, including two types of maximum knee flexion. Continuous x-ray images of kneeling, squatting, and stair climbing motions were taken using a large flat panel detector. CT-derived bone models were used for the model registration-based 3D kinematic measurements. Three-dimensional joint kinematics and con...

Introduction: Low back pain is the most prevalent orthopedic disorder and the first main cause of poor working functionality in developed as wells as many developing countries. In Absence of noninvasive in vivo measurement approaches, biomechanical models are used to estimate mechanical loads on human joints during physical activities. To estimate joint loads via musculoskelet...
